Coastal Cottage Makeover

Check out how the cottage looked before here. You’ll definitely want to see it before you look at this transformation. You’ll be amazed and definitely inspired! Everything in this cottage flows together. It’s open, fresh and inviting.

This beautiful buffet stands at the entrance. It was custom made and is a large piece. It welcomes you right into the cottage.

The addition of the large mirror, beach glass, jars and wood sign pull everything together.

Once you step inside you are greeted by a welcoming wood table. If you remember the before pictures, this table was dark with blue legs. The dark wood floors go throughout the entire cottage and the light tones in the wood match all of the decor.

Next to the table is a sweet nook that has a big comfy chair to sit in. The view from that corner is perfect because it’s next to a big open window overlooking the water.

Next is the living room which only gets used on rainy days and in the winter! This space is so airy and bright.

This cozy spot is perfect for cuddling on cold days with warm blankets while sitting right next to the fire place.

The Kitchen

The old kitchen is completely ripped out. New cupboards, shelves, a white back splash, appliances and counter tops completely transform the space. The partial wall gets a larger counter top than it had before to make more room for a food prep area and a larger space for entertaining. Plus the addition of bar stools for more seating makes it a welcome space.

The Bathroom

If you remember the bathroom in the before you will notice it was much smaller and tighter. The bathroom was also completely ripped out, the walls moved and it becomes a more functional space with added storage.

The black hardware, decor touches, large driftwood piece and wood sign give this bathroom the perfect coastal look.

The Bedrooms

Remember the wood paneling? All gone! Each bedroom is much brighter because of the new furniture, bright linens and decorative art on the walls.

From the painted furniture,

to the lighting,

to the sliding closet doors and decor, all the small touches are perfection in these bedrooms.

Outside

Even though the inside of this cottage is gorgeous the outside is even better! There’s lost of green grass, a big deck, it’s close to the beach and there’s lots of space to relax.

And what about that view? Stunning!

This cottage was built in 1958 when wood panelling was popular. It was also a low cost option at the time and pretty easy to install. This was the entryway and dining room.

The kitchen gets a major overhaul. Everything feels dark and closed off and since it was build in the 1950’s the cabinetry, lighting and floors are outdated.

The kitchen area was cramped with not much usable surface space.

The tiny bathroom had no room for storage so the plan was to expand it. This room gets a big refresh with more space and a new shower, toilet and vanity.

The bedrooms were all covered with wood panelling and looking a bit dark. Everything from the ceiling, walls and floor gets torn down and rebuilt.

Cottage Renovation

The main goal was to turn the cottage from dark and dated to modern and airy. And the best way to do that was to start from scratch. Walls were removed, wood panelling gone, new flooring installed, the bathroom expanded and ceilings completely redone.

One of the few things that stayed in the cottage was a wood dining table. You can see it in the background here. It gets re-painted white, gets new chairs and looks like a new piece of furniture.

Materials We Used

We have a wood burning fireplace, it has been used for years but we weren’t sure if we would use it again for that purpose. So just in case we did decided to use it again we made sure to use high heat paint so that it doesn’t peel off. Here is everything we used for this make over:

Brick Fireplace Makeover

First we cleaned, removed the cover and spray painted the fireplace insert. If you’re using heat enamel paint you will have to start a fire to seal the paint. It dries pretty quickly and turns into a nice matte color.

Once the insert was completely dry we covered it with plastic sheeting and washed the brick using TSP Plus, a concentrated cleaning solution. This part gets messy as you’re scrubbing the brick from all the dust and dirt!

Once the brick is clean and dry we made sure the wood mantel and floor were covered and got to painting. I think this part was easier than cleaning the brick!

Even though the brick is very porous we only have to do one coat of white paint!

This definitely took more than 1 weekend to complete but overall I think the longest part was waiting for everything to dry.

I love how the matte black turned out. We are keeping the wood mantel the same because it matches our windows nearby.

The white just brightens up the entire living room. It’s so much bolder and a real focal piece in the room. I can’t wait to start decorating! What do you think of our brick fireplace makeover?

We have this small space beside our kitchen. It’s awkward, and mostly a catch all for all things junk. We had a table there but as you can see, that just became a storage space for bulky items and cleaning supplies. This is the “before” picture. It looks like a complete mess.

Small Space Ikea Storage Makeover

We took everything out and started from scratch. First we installed this BESTÅ storage sideboard from Ikea. This solved our storage problem and looks way cleaner! Plus it left more space to move around and get to the back yard, since our sliding door is right next to it. We even had enough space on the side to add recycling bins.

The opposite wall is also an awkward space but stay tuned for that project because we turn it into a command center to help keep us organized.

Now that the ikea storage system is in place, we needed to think of what to put on the wall. Art? Cupboards? Nothing? We chose floating shelves because the place is small and floating shelves will give the illusion of more space. We got shelves from Ikea too! First we put painters tape on the wall because I wanted it to line up nicely and look just right. Plus it had to line up perfectly with the thermostat (apparently whoever installed the thermostat thought the middle of the wall was a good spot?)

Charra put up the shelves. My favorite part was putting the finishing touches together. Everything was bought from random places, Ikea, dollar store, garage sales. I even made this modern wall art to add to the shelves, it was super easy and only cost about $4 to make.

We wanted to make sure that the thermostat was covered, but also accessible so we found this cute letter board.

These glass jars are perfect for storing dried goods, and you guessed it, they’re from Ikea too. And no, the cookies don’t last long around here!

The decor on the shelves is minimal, which is perfect for me. I can change up a few thing seasonally.

I love how this small space makeover turned out! It’s not cluttered anymore, we have storage space, it was a simple project and budget friendly.
