We finally painted out brick fireplace, check out the before and after here. Since we finished painting close to November I couldn’t wait to decorate it for Christmas. I wanted to keep it simple, minimalist and able to easily transform from Christmas to winter decor. It turned out beautiful!

Minimalist Christmas and Winter Fireplace

To start I got a large evergreen garland and laid it on the mantel. The garland felt a bit lonely so I made my own pearl garland. I also added single pearls onto ornament hooks and attached them to the garland.

Next I wanted a mirror that matched the fireplace insert and could be used year round. I made sure to secure it and used the garland to hide any spots showing.

I found these clear acrylic reindeer at the dollar tree! They cost about a dollar each and I painted them white and put them throughout the mantel. They each needed 3 coats of paint but I think spray painting may have been a bit easier. I feel like these would look amazing with silver or gold paint too.

A good friend suggested that I add a red nose to one of the reindeer and turn him into Rudolph. Of course that turned out amazing and gives just a tiny bit of color to my minimalist Christmas fireplace. To all the people that love cheerful and bright Christmas colors rest assured that I did include that in other parts of the house! The tree is colorful and so is a lot of the other decor.

I found this wire basket at the dollar store and added birch wood pieces that I cut to fit. Since the fireplace is actually a working wood burning one I think the touch of wood was just right.

Of course nothing is more cozy than a blanket (you can never have enough blankets) so that was added into a neutral basket.

This minimalist Christmas fireplace really came together with each piece. Everything cost less than $100 and there’s still enough space to add personal touches. Stockings, a Christmas village or even lights would look great added in.

Indoor Scavenger Hunt

This indoor scavenger hunt is great for toddlers, preschoolers and even big kids. If your kids are a bit older you can give them each a clipboard with their own scavenger hunt printable. Now, instead of bringing everything on the list to one spot and making a mess I tell them to write down where they found their object. It’s a great way to get them writing and sounding out words while they are on the hunt!

All you need to make these fun sun catchers are

• Plastic or silicone dishes
• Items from nature (berries, leaves, sticks, pine needles etc)
• String or rope
• Water

Make an Ice Sun Catcher

If you want your ice sun catcher to look clear the easiest way to do that is boiling water first. Let it cool beforehand, especially if children are helping out. While the water is cooling it’s a great time to get dressed, head outside and find some items for your sun catchers. We found some blue berries, leaves and sticks.

Fun Fact: hot water freezes faster than cold water! It’s known as the Mpemba Effect.

Once you’ve collected all your items and your water has cooled down, pour the water into the dish. Add a strong piece of string or rope to the water. Make sure it’s a thick piece of rope and that it’s fully submerged in the water.

Add whatever nature pieces you have, berries, leaves, sticks, pine needles.

Let the dish freeze outside over night. Once frozen, carefully remove the ice from the dish and hang in a tree. I may have got a bit excited before it froze and touched my sun catcher but just leave it!

I think the ice sun catcher turned out lovely. It’s a fun way to embrace the cold and snow, even though I’m actually dreaming of summer.

And if you live somewhere hot year round this is still a fun activity to bring in a little bit of winter, even if it’s for a short while.
