Ikea Hemnes Shoe Cabinet for Winter Gear

If you have a ton of shoes, the Ikea Hemnes shoe cabinet is the perfect solution because it holds about 14 pairs of shoes! But in my household we have way more winter gear than we have shoes! Our house has a small entryway and coat closet. Besides some coats and a few shoes there isn’t much space for other items.

Our living room is directly next to the entryway, sharing a wall. This space was sitting pretty empty with a couple chairs and a clock. So we decided to utilize the space and make it a more useful space for our winter stuff.

A family of 4 has a lot of winter clothing! And anyone with kids knows that mornings are chaotic when you’re searching for that missing glove or hat! We really needed a designated spot to hold out gear. We started by measuring the wall next to the entryway and realized that 2 of the Hemnes shoes cabinets would fit perfectly beside each other! 

After building the cabinets we gave each family member their own section for their winter clothing. This was such a good idea for us, especially because it gives the kids their own place to keep their things. It keeps them organized and responsible for their own accessories.

The drawer at the top of the cabinet is perfect for storing items you use everyday, like your keys or wallet. Also, it’s great for storing items used occasionally like flashlights, candles or reusable bags.

• Envelopes
• Cricut machine
• Cricut cutting mat
• Permanent vinyl in color of your choice.
• Transfer tape
• Measuring tape
• Weeding tool and scraper

DIY Cash Stuffing Envelopes for Budgeting

Start by identifying your expenses and prioritize which envelopes you’d like to make. Open Cricut Design Space and start a new project. Insert the font options and choose your font (I used Font Mini Garden.) Enter your categories and adjust the size to fit your envelopes. There’s no need to get fancy with your envelopes, I had a smaller planner and bought plastic envelopes for it, but you could just as easily use paper or plastic organizers. And if you don’t have a Cricut machine use stickers from the dollar store, or simply use a sharpie to label your envelopes.

Next go to “Make it” and select with mat option (If you’re using Smart vinyl you will not need to use a mat). Then select your material. Connect to your Cricut machine and load your Cricut mat when prompted.

Once the categories are cut, unload the machine and cut out the vinyl. Weed the excess vinyl around the cut categories.

Cut a piece of transfer tape and place it over the categories. Peel away from the backing.

Next position the transfer tape over an envelope, pressing down and carefully peeling the transfer tape so that the category is left on the envelope.

Continue onto the other envelopes and you’re done!

Next, you’ll just have to decide how much you’re wanting to spend in each category and start your saving!

It may also be helpful to start with a few categories and gradually add more as you become comfortable with the system. Here are a few different categories that you could include:

Command Center Ideas

Start with a with a spot that is easy to see but doesn’t take up too much space. Our kitchen area is tiny and my main goal was set up a calendar so the family can see important dates and appointments. I say “we” but I mean my husband. I picked an empty wall near the kitchen. First I put up a calendar and that really did help us both keep up to date with monthly appointments, plus it left room for memo notes.

And since I needed a spot for mail I used an Ikea spice rack as a letter holder. It fits perfectly and I didn’t even need to paint it because across from the command center wall, we have floating shelves with touches of wood in the decor. So it matched perfectly!

Next I needed some hooks to hold our keys and masks. I found these awesome buddy wall hooks off Amazon. They look like little men trying to climb the wall. I thought they were fun and they fit perfectly with the command center.

Next, I went looking to add something to the top of the command center and went with a retro looking wall light. Instead of hard wiring it you can attach it to the wall and buy mini touch lights for the bottom.

If you need to know one thing about me, it’s that I love black. I will always choose black for decor, clothing, paint, you name it. I just love the aesthetic so I added a black cart to hold water bottles, snacks and any other random thing that the kids will bring. It’s always a good idea to leave some empty space to see how everything works for your family and then adjust from there.

It’s always is nice to add fresh flowers, plants or succulents.

There is the finished spot! It barely took up any space and I used a small wall that was empty. I hope you got some command center ideas for your own space.

We have this small space beside our kitchen. It’s awkward, and mostly a catch all for all things junk. We had a table there but as you can see, that just became a storage space for bulky items and cleaning supplies. This is the “before” picture. It looks like a complete mess.

Small Space Ikea Storage Makeover

We took everything out and started from scratch. First we installed this BESTÅ storage sideboard from Ikea. This solved our storage problem and looks way cleaner! Plus it left more space to move around and get to the back yard, since our sliding door is right next to it. We even had enough space on the side to add recycling bins.

The opposite wall is also an awkward space but stay tuned for that project because we turn it into a command center to help keep us organized.

Now that the ikea storage system is in place, we needed to think of what to put on the wall. Art? Cupboards? Nothing? We chose floating shelves because the place is small and floating shelves will give the illusion of more space. We got shelves from Ikea too! First we put painters tape on the wall because I wanted it to line up nicely and look just right. Plus it had to line up perfectly with the thermostat (apparently whoever installed the thermostat thought the middle of the wall was a good spot?)

Charra put up the shelves. My favorite part was putting the finishing touches together. Everything was bought from random places, Ikea, dollar store, garage sales. I even made this modern wall art to add to the shelves, it was super easy and only cost about $4 to make.

We wanted to make sure that the thermostat was covered, but also accessible so we found this cute letter board.

These glass jars are perfect for storing dried goods, and you guessed it, they’re from Ikea too. And no, the cookies don’t last long around here!

The decor on the shelves is minimal, which is perfect for me. I can change up a few thing seasonally.

I love how this small space makeover turned out! It’s not cluttered anymore, we have storage space, it was a simple project and budget friendly.

I wanted a simple black and white printable that you could print easily from your home computer. Hubby wanted to spice things up, so to speak, and add some pictures to the grocery list. We couldn’t decide which one to use so we made both available. I can’t help but laugh but this is what I am saying when I say we are total opposites and can’t fully agree on things. Both grocery lists are easily printable but you can choose which one you want.

We usually take turns going grocery shopping and with the pandemic going on I am trying to bring the least amount of things with me. Even though I like keeping some of my lists digital, I’m trying not to hold my phone when I go out. The less things you touch the better. We keep our list near the kitchen so we can add to it when we need to and then it’s ready for our weekly grocery trip. This system really works for us and we hope it will help plan your shopping trips.
